Day 6 in Sardinia - transition through the rain

I will never complain about luck and timing. Today was a transition day from Orgosolo in the East to Bosa on the west side of the island. I had kind of thought that it would be perfect if I would just do the drive in the morning, unpack and assemble my bike outside, go for a ride and then check into my AirBNB.

Nope, that idea of perfection didn’t happen. What did happen was weather. It has been hot the last few days, and combined with the rain from yesterday, today’s precipitation pretty much nixed any ideas of riding. But it also brought temperatures down 10-15 degrees, which was nice after the last few days of hot sunny weather.

I made the mistake of directing my day from my stomach,  as I tried to look for little mom & pop trattorias in the little towns between Orgosolo and Bosa. Fortunately, it did not end in a bunch of crunched rental car metal like when our family visited Cinque Terre seven years ago. But it was CLOSE!

In little town of Santa Lussurgiu, I found even littler streets to navigate my rental Toyota Corolla Cross through. It was so tight I retracted my mirrors while driving  through the narrowest streets. This was all in desperate service of finding lunch, which I failed to do. What I did do was get myself into one spot where I was not sure whether I was required to drive up stairs in order to follow the bend to the left. (I did not). I should have taken a hint from a fellow driver who decided that things were getting too hairy and just decided to do a 10 pointer and turn their car around.

But nooooo! I kept on going and luckily found a spot even deeper into the ever narrowing roads to do my own 12 pointer and turn my car around. At several points both on the way there and back, I just crossed my fingers that if the front of the car made it through an opening, the rest of the car would follow. I know that if your vehicle is long enough, this will not work, i.e. the Food Link van Amealia 2. Fortunately, this was not the case with my rental. Sweaty palms were the order of the day, and I expected to hear the awful sound of metal crunching on century’s old stone, but fortunately it never happened. After a harrowing 5-7 minutes of looking for lunch, I finally made it out to the main road with not even a scratch. Of course, I was convinced that my zero sum of luck would result in some sort of fender bender with a fellow driver, but thatl did not come to pass.

I finally made it into Bosa after giving up on places to eat along the way and had a very satisfying but late lunch at Bacco Bistrot, which I had enjoyed during my last trip to Sardinia. It started raining extra hard while there, and I really enjoyed seeing the staff filming their fellow colleagues trying to make it from the kitchen to the other side of the street (the restaurant is on both sides of the main pedestrian street in old town Bosa).

I followed that up with a very fruity Mirtho gelato (where have you been all my life?!) and then grabbed my belongings and dragged them over the cobbles to my AirBNB.

For dinner, I was looking for an elusive pizza truck, but ended up having a yummy mortadella and pistachio Piadina

The sunset was lovely, and I finally got a good night of sleep for the first time in a few nights. I suspect it was because of the more comfortable pillows and bedding at the new place.
